Recipe for one Horror Film
Year 10 Media Arts Short Film Production – Term 01 Mr. Andrews
Task 1: Self-reflection and evaluation:
Please answer each question using complete sentences, including as much detail as possible.
Discuss your feelings about the production task: Please explain your responses:
Did you enjoy creating your short film?
I enjoyed creating my short film because I have never don anything like this before - in this amount of detail. I also enjoyed working in my group and seeing how each other thinks and contributed to the story line and creation of the film.
Are you satisfied with the final result?
I’m satisfied with the final result, there are some elements of the film that I would’ve wanted to be in the film but it just didn’t work out that way.
Did your film turn out as well as you pictured?
It turned out better than I pictured it, I was seeing it as a really amateur film hardly showing any of our skills but I was proved wrong with the final result showing that it was better than I could of expected.
Would like to change or improve any aspects of your final film (storyline, shots, editing etc.)?
I would of liked to added some small things just to give extra impact on the story making that just bit more clear to the audience.
If you could start the project again, what would you do differently?
I wouldn’t change much, I really like how it has turned out. The only thing that I would do is think more carefully about the shot angles.
As this task focused on mise-en-scene and cinematography, describe:
How you used specific elements of mise-en-scene to depict your film’s genre and enhance the narrative?
We used specific props for our scene so we gave off the right theme, we used lighting and costumes.
How you used specific shot types to convey the storyline without dialogue?
Shooting things on an angle or from a certain height to show urgency and uncertainty from the character.
Whether the intended genre is depicted clearly or if this could be improved?
I feel that our intended genre is very clear.
Reflecting upon your completed task, respond to the following points:
How did other people respond to your rough-edit? Did you use their feedback to make changes to the film?
Our feedback was really helpful we used what everyone had to say which was mainly focusing the shots more.
Did your group use the planning and analysis tools effectively? (storyboards, shot lists, mise-en-scene evaluation).
I think we did because our film went exactly to plan only leaving out some things that we later decided not necessary.
Did shooting require more or less time than you thought? Why?
It required more time than I thought because everyone in my group are perfectionists so we would shoot the scenes a couple of times.
Were there any problems or difficulties during filming and how did this affect your project. (Difficulties may include; shooting, technical, time-management, teamwork, absences or editing etc.);
There weren’t any major problems or difficulties throughout the project, probably because we all had the same idea of what we were doing.
Discuss whether you undertook adequate and detailed reflection to support your work? (Look at your blogs and consider if it looks like a terms worth of work);
I think that I kept up to date pretty well on my blog I’m not to sure that they did as well but the making of the film was definitely a group effort.

Fifth Lesson on Assignment
This lesson was spent looking through the comments from out peers and fixing our film. We fixed our shots to fit the film better than what we had previously, re-focusing and the angle of the camera. We changed the colour of the entire film to black and white to really give impact on the fact that its a 'dramatic' crime film.
Forth Lesson on Assignment
In this lesson we did some editing before showing it to the class. I was really interesting seeing everyone's films and giving them our thoughts on it. When it came to our film I was really excited to see how everyone liked it. By the end of the lesson we had comments from all the other groups, most of the comments were really positive and were only saying to fix our focus. We already knew what went wrong with the focus on the close-up shots, we didn't have the right setting on the camera.

Third Lesson on Assignment
During this time the next shots that were put into the film were done in boarding on the weekend which I can't go into so it was just Liv and Carrington filming by themselves. They did a really great job with all the shots, even though some could be improved it was a good start and a good way to get positive criticism from the rest of the class. I'm really excited to see how the class feels about our film and hear what they have to say about it.
Second Day on Assignment
Today we started working on the film, mainly taking our time to film it all properly. We do our first shot of Liv sitting at her desk with the camera positioned facing upwards towards Liv showing she has importance. We first tried a couple of different ways but we thought this was the most successful to portray the character well. We did other shots for Olivia looking for clues - we decided not using the tripod because we wanted the aspects of seeing everything from Olivia's view. We don't think some of the shots worked out, they didn't come into focus because we didn't use the right settings on the camera but we will fix it after we had finished the whole film.
First Day on Assignment
Today is the first day working on the assignment, my group consists of me, Olivia B and Carrington B. Our theme of our assignment is crime, main actor is Olivia. We spent the lesson doing the storyboard of the assignment; figuring out whats going to happen, when it will happen and how we will film the shots. We decided that the film will be about a missing school girl (Carrington) and the main character (Olivia) is the detective looking for her - completes the park of the task when the main character is looking for something.
